Car Key Fob Battery Replacement: Which Size, and How to Do It

Your car key fob starts needing to be closer and closer to the door before it unlocks, or the buttons only work every second or third press. Before assuming something is actually wrong with the fob, it is almost always the battery, and replacing it is a five-minute job you can do yourself without a trip to the dealer or a locksmith.

The one rule that actually matters: read the old battery, do not guess

CR2032 is by far the most common car key fob battery, and if you had to bet on one size without opening the fob, that is the bet to make. But it is genuinely not universal, some models and some model years use the thinner CR2025 instead, and a few use the even thinner CR2016. Even within the same brand, different key designs can use different sizes. The only way to know for certain is to open the fob and read the code printed on the old battery itself, or check your owner's manual. Guessing from the car brand alone is how people end up with a battery that is the wrong thickness.

Common Singapore car brands: what to expect

These are common starting points, not guarantees. Confirm against your own old battery before buying:

  • Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru: commonly CR2032, the default to check first for these brands' more common models.
  • Mercedes-Benz, some Volkswagen and Audi keys: sometimes CR2025, the slimmer size, particularly on card-style or slim fob designs.
  • BMW, Audi, Mercedes premium and smart keys: more mixed, some models use standard coin cells, others use different sizes entirely. Always check on these rather than assume.
  • Certain BMW, Tesla and other EV or high-end smart keys: a small number use sealed or rechargeable batteries rather than a swappable coin cell. If your manual describes the key battery as non-serviceable, do not try to pry it open, this is a different repair entirely.

Why the exact size matters

CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 are all 3V lithium coin cells and share the same 20mm diameter, but differ in thickness, 3.2mm, 2.5mm and 1.6mm respectively. A thinner battery dropped into a slot built for a thicker one can sit loose and make poor, intermittent contact, causing exactly the reduced-range symptoms that made you suspect the battery in the first place. Forcing a thicker battery into a slot built for a thinner one can crack the plastic housing or stress the fob's internal retaining clip. Matching the exact code on the old battery avoids both problems.

How to actually replace it

  1. Find the small notch or seam on the fob's edge, usually where a key blade folds out or a visible parting line runs around the case.
  2. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, a coin, or a plastic pry tool into the notch and gently twist or pry to separate the case.
  3. Note which side of the old battery faces up before removing it, most fobs seat the positive (+) side facing a particular direction, and getting this backwards means the fob simply will not power on.
  4. Lift the old battery out with a fingernail or tweezers, avoiding touching the circuit board contacts directly.
  5. Press the new battery in the same orientation as the old one.
  6. Snap the case back together and test the fob before walking away from your car.

In the near-universal majority of cases, a battery swap does not erase the fob's pairing or require reprogramming, the pairing data lives in a separate non-volatile chip that the battery does not affect. If the fob still does not work after a fresh, correctly-oriented battery, the issue is more likely a worn button contact or a fault elsewhere in the fob rather than the battery.
