Reaching for a CR2032 and only finding a CR2025 in the drawer? Coin cell codes look interchangeable but the numbers actually mean something, and some swaps are safe while others quietly shorten your battery life or do not fit at all. Here is what a CR2032 can and cannot be replaced with.

What the CR2032 code means
The numbers are dimensions, not a model name. For a CR coin cell, the first two digits are the diameter in millimetres and the last two are the thickness in tenths of a millimetre. So a CR2032 is 20mm wide and 3.2mm thick, a CR2025 is 20mm wide and 2.5mm thick, and a CR2016 is 20mm wide and 1.6mm thick. The C means lithium chemistry and the R means a round cell, giving a nominal 3 volts.
Exact CR2032 equivalents (safe to use)
These are the same 20 by 3.2mm 3V lithium cell under different brand codes. Any of them replaces a CR2032 directly:
- DL2032 (Duracell branding)
- ECR2032 (Energizer branding)
- KCR2032, LM2032 and similar catalogue codes
- 5004LC and SB-T15 in older reference charts
One nuance: a BR2032 is also a 3V lithium coin cell but uses a carbon-monofluoride chemistry rather than manganese dioxide. It has a slightly lower capacity and a wider temperature tolerance, so it works in place of a CR2032 in nearly all everyday devices.
Can you use a CR2025 or CR2016 instead of a CR2032?
Sometimes, with trade-offs. All three share the same 20mm diameter, so they slot into the same holder, but the thickness and capacity differ:
- CR2032: 3.2mm thick, the highest capacity of the three at around 225mAh
- CR2025: 2.5mm thick, around 165mAh
- CR2016: 1.6mm thick, around 90mAh
A thinner cell like a CR2025 may physically fit a CR2032 holder but sit loose and lose contact, and it will run flat sooner because it holds less charge. Going the other way, a CR2032 is usually too thick for a slot designed for a CR2025 or CR2016 and should not be forced in. The rule of thumb: dropping in a thinner cell is an emergency stopgap, not a permanent fix, and never force a thicker cell into a shallow holder.
What is not a CR2032 replacement
- 1.5V cells (LR or SR codes): alkaline and silver-oxide button cells are 1.5V, half the voltage of a CR2032, so they will not power a 3V device correctly. See our button battery cross-reference guide for those.
- LIR2032: this is a rechargeable lithium-ion version at 3.6V, not 3V. It is only safe in a device specifically designed to recharge it, not as a drop-in for a standard CR2032.
A quick safety note
Coin cells are a serious swallowing hazard for young children and pets. Keep spare and used cells out of reach, and tape over the terminals of dead cells before disposal. Never force a battery that does not fit, since a pinched or punctured cell can leak or overheat.
