Can I replace LR54 with LR44? No. Although both button cells are 11.6 mm wide and supply 1.5 V, an LR44 is 5.4 mm thick while an LR54 is only 3.0 mm thick. The LR44 may stop the battery cover closing or damage the contacts. Use the size printed on the old battery or in the device manual.

LR44 vs LR54: key differences

LR44 and LR54 are alkaline button cells with the same diameter and nominal voltage, but their different thickness and capacity make them physically incompatible in most devices. LR44 is common in calculators, toys, laser pointers and kitchen scales. The slimmer LR54 is used in watches, compact lights and other low-profile electronics.

Equivalent codes must match the same physical size and chemistry. A76 and AG13 identify the LR44 format; LR1130 and AG10 identify the LR54 format; AG3 identifies the LR41 format; AG12 identifies the LR43 format. Similar voltage alone does not make two button cells interchangeable.

LR41 and LR43: the smaller and mid-size cousins

LR41 is the smallest of the four, at 7.9 mm × 3.6 mm and 1.5 V. It is common in quartz watches, small thermometers, calculators, laser pointers and pen-style flashlights. Its most widely sold equivalent is AG3, also labelled 192 or 392, all the same physical size and chemistry.

LR43 sits between LR54 and LR44 in thickness, at 11.6 mm × 4.2 mm and 1.5 V. It appears in cameras, calculators and some watches that need slightly more capacity than an LR54 but do not have room for a full LR44. Its direct equivalent is AG12, also sold as 186 or 386.

None of LR41, LR43, LR44 or LR54 should be substituted for one another based on voltage alone; all four are 1.5 V, but four different thicknesses. Always match the code printed on the old cell, or the size specified in the device manual.
