Which HDMI Adapter Do You Actually Need? A Quick Guide

HDMI is HDMI, right? Not quite — the right adapter depends on what you're plugging into what. Here's a quick rundown of seven adapters we've added, so you can grab the right one the first time.

Got a laptop or tablet with a small port?

If your device has a Micro HDMI port (common on some tablets, cameras, and older ultrabooks), you need a male-to-female step-up adapter to connect to a standard HDMI cable. Gold-plated for a clean signal, supports up to 4K.

Got a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 laptop or phone?

Modern laptops and phones often drop the HDMI port entirely in favour of USB-C. This adapter converts USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 output straight to HDMI, supporting 4K @ 30Hz, so you can mirror or extend to any monitor, TV, or projector.

Need to join two HDMI cables together?

Cable too short? Instead of buying a whole new longer cable, this female-to-female coupler joins two standard HDMI cables into one longer run — gold-plated with EMI/RFI shielding to keep the signal clean over the extended length. Also doubles as a port saver on TVs and consoles.

Mounting a TV on the wall?

Straight HDMI plugs can strain the port and stick out awkwardly behind a wall-mounted TV. This 90-degree adapter turns the connection sideways for a low-profile fit in tight spaces — 4K supported, gold-plated.

Got an older DVI-D-only computer or graphics card?

Legacy desktops and older graphics cards often only have a DVI-D output — the fully digital version of DVI. This adapter converts DVI-D (24+1) to standard HDMI so you can connect straight to a modern display, no new cable needed.

Got an older DVI-I port instead, or an older Mac Mini?

Some laptops, desktop graphics cards, and older Macs (including the Mac Mini Mid 2007) use DVI-I instead of DVI-D — a version of DVI that also carries an analog signal alongside the digital one, identifiable by the extra flat pin block next to the main pins. This adapter converts DVI-I (24+5) to standard HDMI, with integrated thumb screws for a secure connection.

Working with a field monitor, DSLR, or handheld console?

Compact devices like field monitors, DSLR cameras, handheld consoles, and mini PCs often use a Mini HDMI port instead of full-size HDMI. This adapter bridges a standard HDMI cable to a Mini HDMI device, with EMI shielding to keep the signal clean on set or on the go.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Micro HDMI and Mini HDMI?

They're different sizes and not interchangeable. Micro HDMI (Type D) is the smaller of the two, typically found on tablets and some older ultrabooks. Mini HDMI (Type C) is a bit larger and more common on cameras, field monitors, and handheld consoles. Check your device's port before ordering — the two won't fit each other's cables.

What's the difference between DVI-D, DVI-I, 24+1, and 24+5?

DVI-D and DVI-I refer to what kind of signal the port carries: DVI-D is digital-only, while DVI-I carries both a digital and an analog signal. The numbers describe the pin layout: 24+1 is the DVI-D single-link pin count, and 24+5 is the DVI-I single-link pin count (the extra pins carry the analog signal). Visually, DVI-I has a small block of four pins plus one flat blade pin off to the side of the main pin grid; DVI-D does not. Match the adapter to your exact port — a DVI-D adapter will not physically fit a DVI-I-only port's extra pins, and vice versa, since the pin layouts differ.

Is a "DVI to HDMI" adapter the same as an "HDMI to DVI" adapter?

No — these run in opposite directions and are not interchangeable. A DVI to HDMI adapter (what we sell) takes a DVI output from your computer or graphics card and converts it so a standard HDMI cable can connect to your display. An HDMI to DVI adapter does the reverse — taking an HDMI source and converting it to plug into a DVI-only display. Our DVI adapters are one-directional: built for DVI source to HDMI display only. If you instead need to send an HDMI signal into an older DVI-only monitor, you'd need the opposite adapter, which we don't currently carry.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work with any USB-C laptop or phone?

It works with USB-C ports that support video output over USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3). Most modern USB-C laptops support this, but a small number of USB-C ports are data/charging only and won't output video — worth checking your device's spec sheet if you're unsure.

Does an HDMI coupler or adapter reduce video quality?

A well-made, gold-plated adapter or coupler shouldn't introduce any noticeable quality loss for typical cable runs. All the adapters in this guide are rated for up to 4K (1080p for the two DVI adapters), so they're built to carry a full high-resolution signal cleanly.

Can I use the HDMI coupler for a very long cable run?

Yes for reasonable extensions — joining two standard cables end to end. For very long total distances (tens of metres), signal quality can degrade regardless of adapter, and you'd want an active/powered HDMI extender instead of a passive coupler.

Do any of these adapters need external power?

No — all seven are passive adapters and draw whatever power they need directly from the HDMI, DVI, or USB-C connection. Nothing here needs a separate power source.
